Electrical Services
In Edgewater, NJ
We handle residential and commercial electrical work across Edgewater and the surrounding Bergen County towns. The sections below cover what we do and what each service typically costs.
Residential Electrical Repairs and Upgrades in Edgewater
Most calls we take are residential. We handle dead outlets, tripping breakers, failing switches, and circuits that were never sized for the loads now running on them.
Residential electrical upgrades in Bergen County usually mean adding dedicated circuits, GFCI and AFCI protection where code requires it, and upgrading the service to 200 amps. See our electrical panel upgrade service for what that work involves.
As a light fixture electrician, we also handle chandeliers, recessed lighting, ceiling fans, and dimmer installs, including fixtures on high ceilings that need proper bracing and support.
What to Do in an Electrical Emergency
We don’t keep a technician on call around the clock. When one is available, we take emergency calls starting at $350 per hour. Call (201) 385-5000 and we’ll tell you how soon someone can come out.
Call us right away if you notice any of the following:
- A burning or acrid smell near an outlet, switch, or panel
- Sparking, arcing, or visible scorch marks
- A panel or outlet cover that is warm to the touch
- Partial power loss across part of the house
- A breaker that trips again immediately after you reset it
If it is safe to reach the panel, shut off power to the affected circuit before you call. Keep water away from any electrical component. If you suspect an active fire risk, call 911 first.
Signs You Need an Electrician
Some problems announce themselves. Others build quietly for years. These are the ones worth a service call rather than a wait-and-see:
- Lights that flicker or dim when a large appliance starts
- Two-prong outlets, meaning the circuit has no ground
- A panel with fuses instead of breakers, or a brand with known defects like Federal Pacific or Zinsco
- Extension cords doing permanent duty because there aren’t enough outlets
- Outlets that feel loose or no longer grip a plug
- Buzzing from a switch, fixture, or panel
A home electrical safety inspection will tell you which of these are cosmetic and which are a real hazard.
What Electrical Work Costs
We quote before we work, so there are no surprises when the invoice arrives. Standard labor is about $200 per hour, emergency calls start at $350 per hour, and most jobs qualify for a free quote.
That rate covers a licensed electrician, insured work, and permits where the code requires them. A diagnostic visit runs $150 to $300 when a problem needs tracing before we can price it. That covers the time to isolate the fault, not guesswork.
| Service | Typical Cost | What Affects the Price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard labor rate | ~$200 / hour | Scope of work, access, and whether a permit is required |
| Emergency service | From $350 / hour | Available when technicians are free; after-hours and weekend calls |
| Diagnostic visit | $150 – $300 | How long the fault takes to trace; most jobs get a free quote instead |
| Electrical panel or meter upgrade (labor) | $1,000 – $2,500 | Utility coordination and service line work raise the total |
| Whole-home Generac generator (installed) | $12,000 – $20,000 | House size, load requirements, and fuel connection |
| Generator maintenance plan | ~$425 / year | Includes routine checks and emergency support |
| Lutron lighting control (3 – 5 rooms) | $6,000 – $12,000 | System line, number of circuits, and keypad count |
| Whole-home lighting control | $15,000 – $35,000+ | Panel capacity, wiring condition, and new build vs. retrofit |
| Motorized shades (per window) | $900 – $2,000 | Window size; specialty and oversized windows cost more |
Ranges are estimates for Edgewater and Bergen County. We do not service portable generators and we do not offer financing.

Standby Generators and EV Chargers
Standby generator and EV charger installations start with the panel. If your existing service can’t carry the added load, we upgrade it first so everything runs connected and up to code.
For residential generator service, we are Generac-certified installers. A whole-home Generac unit typically runs $12,000 to $20,000 installed, depending on the size of the house and the load it needs to carry.
Standby generators in Edgewater also need routine care to stay reliable. Maintenance plans average around $425 per year and include scheduled checks plus emergency support.
Parts of Edgewater sit in mapped flood zones. New Jersey’s post-Sandy recovery report for the borough notes flooding along River Road and that preliminary FEMA maps place most land east of River Road in flood hazard areas. If your home is in one of those areas, ask where the generator and transfer switch will sit relative to expected flood levels before you sign a contract.
We do not service portable generators.
Use our generator size chart and “What Size Generac Do I Need?” guides to determine sizing, or see generator installation cost for a full breakdown. For EV work, see EV charger installation and current New Jersey EV rebates.
Smart Home Systems and Automation
We install smart switches, lights, and thermostats that work with your existing wiring. Whether it’s one room or the whole house, we make sure the devices communicate and run safely.
Smart home installation in Edgewater often starts with lighting control. We install and program Lutron systems across the Caséta, RadioRA 3, and HomeWorks lines, including keypads, custom scenes, and motorized shades. See our smart home installation and smart home cost pages for details and pricing.
Landscape and Security Lighting
Outdoor lighting in Edgewater covers a range of work: driveways, walkways, building perimeters, and landscaped areas. We use weatherproof LED fixtures and plan each installation around visibility, security, and appearance after dark.
Outdoor lighting in Edgewater, NJ covers landscape lighting, path lighting, floodlights, motion sensors, and fixtures with integrated cameras or smart controls.
As roofline lighting contractors in Edgewater, we also handle permanent architectural lighting along eaves and rooflines, wired and controlled so you don’t have to put up seasonal strings every year.
That includes lighting installation in Upper Saddle River and lighting installation in Ridgewood, where larger properties often need transformer sizing and zone planning rather than a single circuit.
| Fixture Type | Installed Cost | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| Motion sensor lights | $350 – $450 each | Side yards, entry doors, and blind spots |
| LED floodlights or spotlights | $350 – $450 each | Driveways, garages, and building perimeters |
| Pathway and landscape lighting | $100 – $250 per light | Walkways, garden beds, and tree uplighting |
| Fixtures with cameras or smart controls | $300 – $800 each | Entry points and properties already running smart systems |
| Pole-mounted or parking lot lights | $1,000 – $3,000 each | Commercial lots, multi-unit buildings, and long driveways |
Layout, trenching distance, and transformer sizing affect the final quote on larger properties.

How to Choose an Electric Contractor in Edgewater
Whoever you hire, run through this list first. It is the same checklist we would want a family member to use:
- Confirm the license number and insurance, and verify the license is active
- Ask whether your job needs a permit and inspection, which panel upgrades, new circuits, and EV chargers usually do
- Get an itemized written estimate, not a verbal number
- Ask how change orders are priced before work starts
- Ask what warranty covers parts and what covers labor
- Describe exactly what you are seeing, hearing, or smelling, since it speeds up diagnosis and lowers your bill

Needed installation of our Ring. I have a friend who is an Electrician and he was out of town. I received a recommendation from my generator service company about Grounded Electric so I called them and they were here the same day. I was so impressed with Barret and I believe the second electrician was Rob. Honesty and suggestions were given to me and my wife on solving our issue. I cannot tell you enough about this company. Needless to say, my friend will no longer be my go to guy for an electrician. If I could give higher than 5 stars, I would. Thank you Barret and Rob. Tom and Nora Morrell. Services Installation

Grounded Electric is my new electrician! I called several companies after hours on a Friday – two days before a big snowstorm was going to hit on Sunday, reporting that my generator wouldn’t start because it both needed maintenance and an overcrank light was lit. Only two companies called me back. One told me they could come out on an emergency basis but would have to charge me double. The other was Grounded Electric, who said they couldn’t come out, but told me how I should be able to reset the generator so it would work should I lose power during the storm. Sure enough, the reset was easy and I didn’t have to worry about losing power. Five days later, they came out and maintained the generator – and charged me less than their quoted price!!
